  Griff's
Posted by: efsk - 07-09-2020, 06:18 AM - Forum: Other SE brands. - Replies (4)

The French "Griff's" is a foldable, open tooth comb SE with its own model blade. Folding it opens the razor so that the blade can be replaced, opening it will hold the blade firmly in place. The blade is NOS, and sticks well into its greaseproof paper, so I did not unpack it further.
The same razor is also available under the brand JAK. Recent I got NOS blades of this brand, and shaved with one of them. The teeth stick far ahead of the blade, which means the razor should be held very flat against the face. The guidance is great as long as it goes from top to bottom. Left->right or down->up is difficult, not the best shaving razor, here amplified because of the hundred years old blade.
At the second shave I tried to work with an old blade sharpener, but it was not a big success.

Which razor is Star No. 5 ??
Posted by: Cleavep222 - 07-09-2020, 05:26 AM - Forum: Catch of the day - Replies (5)

This isn't a new one, but I'm hoping to get help from you fellows and gals.  I bought this set a while back, but it didn't have the razor.  It looks like some of my other WWI military sets, but I can't figure out which razor is supposed to go in it.  Does anyone know?Any help will be appreciated.  Thanks!!

  CrosCut
Posted by: efsk - 07-08-2020, 11:56 AM - Forum: Other SE brands. - No Replies

The Croscut is a slanted (only diagonal, not torqued) SE, produced by the Temperite Co in Philadelphia. They supplied the United Drug Co in Boston, who then sold the razor through their Rexall Drugstores.
Patent (Thank you Andreas ) asked for and granted in 1911, ™ in 1912. An United Drug Co address is known from 1916, so this is an over a century old razor.
It comes with a nice, thin handle, and, like for instance the Irving, a paralellogram shaped head. (Fun Fact: Lemmy Kilmister used the word Parallellogram in his song Motorhead). The blade is placed on the baseplate, and the the cap is moved into place, an exercise not without risk of injury.
As the blades are proprietary and a Feather SE blade does not fit I have no idea how this shaves.
Case of blades was provided, one of them is marked "Dummy Blade".

Came in two versions: silver in a darkblue case, gold in a red case.

  Chinese Artist Club Replica
Posted by: ischiapp - 07-05-2020, 10:24 AM - Forum: Razor Blades - No Replies

The Chinese vendor Sapphoo is already known.
It makes copies of Feather / Kai razors with Artist Club blades.
As well normal shavettes with hald DE blades.
Already offers the AC blades separately, at a good price.
Now it expands its offerings, not only on modern SEs.
https://it.aliexpress.com/store/group/La...64779.html

These blades seem interesting to me.
Type Feather (Proshave)

Type Kai Captain (Blue, without guard)

Type Kai ProTouch (Red, with guard)
On average they have a price of about € 0.50 per blade.

These days I am doing a test with the Sapphoo Red blade.
This is formally proposed as a replica of the Kai Captain Titan Mild MG ProTouch.
[Image: 78R5790m.jpg][Image: dy5QKGlm.jpg]

The first use (yesterday) was less comfortable than the original.
Even today, the feeling is that the edge is different.
Same effectiveness, but different protection.
In fact it can be seen that the guard is different.
The protections are wider, and less rounded.

To the eye they are very similar.
There are only a few differences:
• welding points, four instead of seven and less sharp
• straight shape of the guard openings, instead of a taller and wider bell shape
• the primary bevel is longer, and the secondary bevel shorter (different angle)
• steel has a different color and texture, due to the lack of Titanium and PINK treatments

So the performance, albeit similar, is different.
In the short term, I don't think the real differences can be understood.
I find no abysmal differences with the originals, especially after the first use.
Indeed the quality of Kai is the long-lasting ability of high performance.
I think this detail is difficult to replicate.

Brush makers show thread. Razor handles also welcome.
Posted by: GAW9576 - 07-04-2020, 07:14 PM - Forum: Shave Brushes - Replies (75)

I thought Jayaruh had started a thread here for brush handles. But I don't see one.
Well here we go. This thread is a place for showing custom brush and razor handles weather made on a lathe or carved in another manner. This it for the makers of said handles to show what they have made. It's not intended for showing custom handles you have ordered or production products.

Here is my most recent brush handle. A good friend wanted another brush. He picked up this hybrid blank and the knot and asked me to make a brush of similar shape and size to one I previously made him.
This was my first time turning a hybrid blank. It was a little tricky in spots but overall went pretty good.
The knot is a 26mm Two band badger from Maggard's.

Not a frequent poster nor a frequent reader over at tos2. Mainly interested in stuff that's curved or tilted, a definition that fits a number of SE as well. So basically here for searching and sharing information on those :-)
New forum looks nice.

  Strictly Man's Arctic Shave Butter
Posted by: Jayaruh - 07-02-2020, 06:46 PM - Forum: Shave Soaps & Creams - Replies (5)

Strictly Man sent me a tube of their new Arctic Shave Butter to try out.

It is a non-foaming, clear, shave butter. I am not a fan of this type of product, but I said I would give it a try. Today, I had my first shave with it. It is pretty slick. It has a lot of oils in it. I continued with my cold water shave routine. I did two passes and got a great shave. I didn't have to face lather or clean my brush, so I saved a little time. The shave butter was just about gone after the second pass. It was pretty easy to rinse off after the shave. Because it is clear, you have to feel your way through the shave. My guess is that this was aimed at multi-blade cartridge shavers.

Cold Water Rinse
Arctic Shave Butter
GEM Flying Wing
GEM Stainless
CWR
Granddad's Blend AS

The Arctic Shave Butter is a non-lathering product. Two passes and touch ups with the GEM Flying Wing with a GEM Stainless blade gave me a close, comfortable shave. After a cold water rinse I finished off with Granddad's Blend AS. I am clean, smooth, and refreshed...

Here's the shave.
