Skin Bracer - Possible Forumula Change
Posted by: mrconklin - 02-25-2022, 01:58 AM - Forum: Shave Talk - Replies (1)

I know of the site some here refer to as "across the street".  On another site, a couple blocks over (let's call that site "bed and breakfast" ) there is a discussion going on that the formula for Skin Bracer may have changed.  I don't know if it's true or not, but I picked up a bottle today and it smells identical.  The person that thinks it changed has an inquiry into the company.   Bottles sourced from Amazon and Walmart are said to be different.   A very faint smell and mostly an alcohol smell is the complaint.

Have any of you noticed any changes in the product?  SB is a staple, like Williams soap or Aqua Velva, so I hope it's not been changed.   I actually wish they'd bring back the Skin Bracer Spice.

I'm pretty sure several members here ha e tried The Vergulde Hand shave soap. I'm wondering were a good place to order it is in America. I found it on Amazon and ebay but shipping time or price is pretty bad either way.

I don't know how I got it, but some malware got into my computer. It was a popup that wouldn't let me do anything. It took 3 weeks to get a tech here to clear it out. I learned a few things during the outage. I learned how much I dislike virtual keyboards. Not as much as my dislike for phone keyboards though. I also learned that having to delete a hundred or more emails individually each day is the pits.
But my computer is up and running again.

  New watch project
Posted by: kyle3rv2 - 02-18-2022, 03:39 PM - Forum: The Front Porch - Replies (14)

So I only mess with Timex movements. But Timex watches were sold under other names. In Europe they had a French factory that branded them as keltons. Picked up a cool 70s diver. Found it in Florida on ebay keltons are pretty rare in the us. I've already fixed two of this style Timex so it will be easy. It is on the small side for a men's watch though. The older you get the smaller men's watches usually are. This was small for a man even at the time though at 30mm. Timex had 30mm and a larger size in their diver catalogs I've seen. The size is fine with me though still looks good. Plus to those not in the know they think it's a woman watch and not worth anything. I believe it has the original band I've seen one other kelton the same style with the same band. Pretty cool 70s dive band worth a few bucks in itself.

  Timex watch repair
Posted by: kyle3rv2 - 02-12-2022, 05:13 PM - Forum: The Front Porch - Replies (18)

Felt inspired to work on Timex watches again today. I haven't for a while. I only mess with old hand wind and automatic Timex and battery and hand fixes on quartz as well as strap changes. Anyway I've had a cool 1972 funky Timex I got from Poland on Etsy. It looked good condition but didn't run. I got it after waiting a month or two for it to come to Ohio. Well I looked at it someone messed with it that didn't know what they were doing. The crown was in wrong and the hour hand was upside down. Not big deals but hadn't felt like messing with until now. Got it torn down and found out someone messed with the balance wheel and the pallet fork wasn't moving to transfer power from the mainspring. The pallet fork seemed stuck even after cleaning moving the spring barrel by hand didn't free it. I took a closer look saw the avalanche was too loose but it looked ok otherwise. I loosened more and pushed the pallet fork a couple times to try and free it and it moved. Then I wiggled the balance wheel to reengage it and tightened it back down. It's currently running in a lighter fluid rinse. After it's soak it just needs oiled and assembled and we will see how she tells time. Poor old girl.

  Wedge blade sharpening
Posted by: kyle3rv2 - 02-09-2022, 11:46 PM - Forum: Sharpening & Honing - Replies (2)

I've been using my edge pro apex set to the lowest possible sharpening angle. I got through 220, 400, 1000, 2000, 3000 and 5000 grit. Then I use the edge pro strop attachment and strop about 30 times per side. It's worked on a kampfe and a rolls blade.

Consecutive Daily Shaves - # 1189

I bring you the Firm Blade with half a Shark SS Blade. It looks intimidating and the curved blade had me wondering as I'm sure others would. Is this for ladies armpits or guys shaving. Well if you check the Waits Compendium it will tell you it's a just a razor design basically. Waits is wrong sometimes so checking the Patent US2421205 of 1947 you find that it doesn't distinguish what gender it was made for but does layout the reasoning for the design and their goals. Feel free to read if you want but it wasn't designed specifically for women.

So snapping a DE blade in half and some snipping with some scissors gets a blade sat where it was designed to be.

How's the shave ? VERY.................mild and barely cutting whiskers even with added pressure, but it did clip some as seen in the photo. It was leaving tone of lather behind on a stroke which is a clear indication of none successful shaving strokes.

This necessitated calling in the Kenyon for pass 2 and 3 to get a quality shave. Some more research and playing with a way to get the blade secured more forward for some cutting will be played with. I'm off for some coffee and homemade Apricot Cinnamon Pecan Biscotti....... Have a stellar day folks !!
