There is a story from work where an auditor from EPA came up in January to audit our Ambient Air Quality sites and set his thermometer outside for the temp. Came back 5 minutes later and had to ask our technician for his because all of the mercury was in the bubble because his only went to -20 and it was -45 at the time. All of out thermometers go to -50 for that very reason.
