I went to work on getting the old blade out of the carrier he provided and slipped in half an Astra SP from the 5 pack of blades which were included. (Man Dave is a thoughtful and generous guy.) Holy smokes this thing is aggressive was my first thought. At first I didn't trim the backs of the side tabs at all witch makes the razor nearly an unmentionable with the amount of blade exposure. After consulting Dave and learning that he trims the back edges of the side tabs I did so too. This tamed the razor a bit by allowing the blade to seat deeper in the carrier and reducing the blade exposure to a more normal level. It still felt fairly aggressive but at this point I was a little rushed for time. I look forward to my next shave with this interesting razor when I have more time to get used to it.
Oh yeah I almost forgot Twelvefret inspired me to go with Arko tonight since he seemed to like it so much.
I figured I had something to do with that stinky choice.
Anyway, that is a great looking razor you got in the trade. You might as well be using one of those ancient, long, bare blade with folding plastic cover thing-a-ma-gig unmentionables....LOL!!

This unmentionable was a razor i could not get on with in 2019, i just could not get a comfortable shave from it so it was moved on, i regretted it from the day it was adopted as i loved how it looked and how it feels in the hand, therefore, earlier this year it was replaced with a new one. With a "milder" blade it is still a very efficient razor and for me it works a treat. Maybe my technique has improved - i hope so. With a gentle touch i have a BBS result from 2 passes. I did catch the nick from yesterday, however, that was not an issue today. I am fully Neroli'd up and a very happy shaver. Stay safe and enjoy your day All

Yeah you peer pressured me into using Arko. You're such a bad influence.
I do need to get back to those particular unmentionables soon. With fixing and selling our old camper, buying a new old camper (1978) and updating it, having to do extensive work to fix 2 riding Lawnmowers and homeschooling 3 kids plus all or other social activities I have been a bit lazy and going with almost all SE shaves and a few unmentionable safety razor shaves.

It seemed like things might go well starting on the WTG cheek portion but it all went crashing downhill after that. I wasn’t quite finding the angle, particularly under my chin and top of the neck. Just a bloodbath. I wasn’t feeling it when I cut myself so by time I realized it…too late. I still did three passes because I’m a savage. I literally winced when I rubbed the alum stick around. The best part of this shave is that it’s over and I can laugh at myself for being such an overconfident ass and not taking my time. I will heal and try the Featherweight another day. Perhaps the blade will be a little smoother and the person holding the razor will a little smarter. To better shaves!
Sorry to hear your first shave went like tha. Hope the next is MUCH better. Aside from good prep and lather Extremely light pressure a d top cap flat to your fa e is a good technique. The best shaves I get with SEs are when I concentrate on those two things the whole shave.
Dave in KY I just watched a video and saw that the Dehaven has a feature similar to a Jones Shake Sharp. I was wondering what the function of the floppy bit in the handle and top plate were for. Interesting. I wonder how well it worked with the original blades.

Just know I appreciate our long distance friendship, Greg. I bet your camper and you skills will render a wonderful successful venture. Nothing like camping with the family.
Sorry about the quality of the photo, but this is one of our camping and paddling before the pandemic. Hopefully we can resume next Summer. Im the old man in the back who isn't smiling...LOL!!

Thanks. I appreciate the friendship too.
The camper projects have definitely been a learning experience. And the camping trips have been fantastic. Lots of good memories with family and good friends.

I'm sure it will be. I'm definitely a "learn by doing" kind of person so I think this experience will forever cement the need for good technique with a GEM razor, the payoff being an excellent shave when it's done right! No pain, no gain. Maybe not the best adage to live by when it comes to shaving but one that I seem to be following.

New wet shaver. Currently using mentionables in my happy place.

Yep, similar to the Shake Sharps and I've never attempted as the old blades need more help than this function could give I would say. I'm just happy to be able to use it with a modern blade.
