  DIME Razor Blade Mod
Posted by: Rocketman - 02-07-2024, 04:29 PM - Forum: Blade Modifying - No Replies

The Dime razor was an International Safety Razor Co. competitor starting in the early 1900s  (Patent Dec 1907) . As the package indicates, it cost 10c and was therefore a much more affordable competitor to the Kampfe, GEM, ASR and Gillette razors. The proprietary blade was a simple rectangle and the blades were sold as disposable.

“When blade is dull throw it away”

There are a couple of ways to experience this wonderful little razor:

1. Simply use a Feather Haney SE

2. Modify a standard GEM Ptfe
shown on Tost by Dave in KY DIME Razor Gem blade mod

I am a fan of the Feather blades and try to always at least have them on hand for Auto Strops.
They fit perfectly into the DIME.

The DIME has a very simple wire guard, which as the instructions point out allows for a very comfortable and effective slant/diagonal stroke. The wire guard slides easily at any direction you choose helping significantly to create a slant stroke. It weighs almost nothing (Dave in KY indicates just under 2 ounces) and is a lot of fun to shave with.

Try a Feather in your DIME. A wonderful shave for a razor well over 100 years old.

          Tribute to a Bygone Shaver

I only recently got to shave with a Wilkinson Empire razor that I had picked up quite a few years ago. I was reading here how twhite had a modern blade work-around for this type of razor - so I wanted to go ahead and finally use this particular one. I enjoy these old shaving articles and when I have purchased razors over the years they are typically disconnected from their past. But this Empire razor I had bought in Saint Boniface Manitoba where I was told that the Obituary newspaper cutout which was in the razor case belonged to the Gentleman who had owned it. It was handed down through his family and had remained unused all these years.

I first thought I wanted to share this while I was having the shave. It just seemed like the thing to do.

The razor’s last owner was born in 1875 and he died in 1943 - within 10 years of the razor’s manufacture. When he was a boy, this territory was only recently pulled from private hands (The Hudson Bay Company) and made into the Canadian Province of Manitoba in 1870. A lot has happened since. Wilfred Richardson. Thank you for the razor. Thank you for the shave.

Hi folks. When I hit reply or quote, the text that shouldnt be seen is showing up on the thread like a url, a number string or two. Is this only seen by me or do the posts look like wrong to you too? Not sure what to do with it. I could edit out the extra stuff I suppose. Thoughts? Thank you Using an ipad if that matters.

Feeling the Burn - Proraso white
Posted by: Rocketman - 02-02-2024, 04:44 PM - Forum: Shave Soaps & Creams - Replies (3)

I was inspired recently by TOST member Whiterook’s pre-shave soap choice of Proraso white. I had a bowl of it sitting around. I hadn’t used it much as a shave cream because I find it hard on my skin and it tended to burn as I proceed through a shave.

I liked Whiterook’s use as a pre soap so I gave it a try and it was ok. As a pre-wash it didn’t sit on my skin long - just lather and rinse - it only burned ‘a bit’. So I figured I would make a stick and enter it into my prep potions list.

Well…… I made a stick, wrapped it in foil, let it sit and harden for maybe 10 days or so and …… now I see why I get ‘the burn’! This isn’t just menthol at work here.

The Proraso Pre Stick.

The Unveiling….. WTF?   Corroded the aluminum to bits! Maybe I’m not just some skin sensitive snowflake after all. I had no idea a skin product would do this!

YIKES!  This TOXIC substance is now in my garbage can.
