RE: SOTD - May 2020 - GAW9576 - 05-26-2020

I joined a Parade of Gem Junior Parades today on another forums. I love the Baton handles and have 3 variations in my collection. This shave was excellent and darn near BBS. As always I love the Mer Shaving Fougere orange. This synthetic brush performs exceptionally well and is a joy to own and use.

Today's shave was with a fist use Gem SS PTFE blade. I ran the edge through a packing peanut before using to take out some of the potential harshness these blades tend to have. It seems to have payed off.

I recently received the RazoRock Hawk v2 from a friend and wanted to use it a little on this shave to test it out. Not a bad razor. I'll have to use it a bit more soon as I have been considering the Stainless V3 OC.

A splash of Thayers aloe cucumber was a great finish to a fantastic shave.

Mohican
Star wedge
Ever Ready
RR Black Label
Old Spice

Just about acceptable!
This Star wedge is past it's best now and needs some attention. I have been experimenting trying to break in this NOS Ever Ready knot, after much lathering and towel drying it is somewhere between bearable and acceptable, I don't think it will improve.

Original Ever~Ready knots are scritchy and scrubby, and they stay that way, that's the way I like 'em! It will never get soft no matter what you do, it's a love it or leave it thing.

I wonder if that was the last Mohican?  Tongue

"Scritchy and scruby" is right! And a lot of backbone, when it was "new" it could take your eye out! It is certainly a far cry from a modern Omega.
I read somewhere someone suggesting the knots were cheaply made and they shaped the knot by cutting the tip end, which seems possible. They must also use a different grade of boar hair to get that backbone.
I will keep the brush as it is for when I need to expholiate, too harsh for me for regular use.
It could be the last of the Mohicans, you don't see many about.

Most other vintage boar are nice, the E~R brushes must have been for coal miners or something, they'll definitely give you a good scrub!
